Prior to October 2021, I'd have rated this app 4 stars. Now the app gets slow/unresponsive scrolling through news stories. It happens when I reach an ad embedded in the story. It is difficult to scroll past the ad: there is a lag & it feels like fighting to scroll past the ad. I believe this is intentional in the app design, to keep the ad on screen longer. Makes it much easier to accidentally tap the ad & be brought to viewing the full ad, giving CBC ad click revenue. 2.5 stars, not 3.2024-05-24 10:47:17

Decent app, although somewhat lacking in features, such as seamlessly integrated embedded videos. Sometimes there are irritating issues, such as clicking on a news alert and being taken to the main page of the app, not the story itself. Sometimes these breaking news stories can't even be located from the app's main page, and don't appear to exist yet. The ad structure they employ is also HIGHLY irritating, as the same ad will often play over and over again, sometime 3 or 4 times in a row. Makes me less likely to check the app, and more likely to turn to another news source. Besides these issues, I do enjoy their news stories, and although I feel CBC should really have more local stories from Vancouver Island, it's achieved a decent balance between local, national, and international stories.2024-05-24 08:55:16

Love CBC. However the latest version of the app has some annoying features. If you click on an article that only has a video it is more difficult to stop the ad from playing. Not great if you don't want sound coming from your device at that time. It used to be you could close the ad (you don't get to the video and that's fair) but now you get stuck in an endless loop trying to close the link altogether. Your only option is to close all your open apps on your phone.2024-05-21 12:18:46

In general I really enjoy this app. I just hope CBC videos can improve: 1) less ads in video, it's really annoying to have to watch two ads that are longer in time than the intended content, and I can't even skip the ads. I'm ok with independent ads in the news, just please reduce the ads in videos. 2) video basics such as pause, forward ot backward 10 seconds, or play from middle, etc are not quite smooth. The amount of advertisements is becoming ridiculous! Watching the national online seems like one long commercial. Even worse is trying to watch a media clip in an article that's 30sec or less and you have to sit through 45sec of adds!!! Make sure you don't accidentally rotate your phone, the video will stop but the commercials will restart! It's also amazing how the adds always work even when the clip you want to see doesn't and if you try to go back and restart the clip you have to watch add+++2024-05-19 19:06:58

The videos are preceded by half of minute of advertising. Then the video plays but crashes over 90% of the time. This has been my experience over the last 2 years. They haven't been able to resolve this problem. Very frustrated. Update: Still the same issues and now in some cases, CBC has increased the number of ads from 2 to 3 and increased the length of ads as well as added pop up ads to print stories. Too much for me. I'll find my news elsewhere and your content on YouTube instead.2024-05-19 07:15:06
