Another Classic Bungie Game Released Free on Steam
Bungie and Aleph One have collaborated to release Marathon 2 for free on Steam, a groundbreaking FPS that set the stage for future games. The release includes optional upgrades such as widescreen support and texture packs, revitalizing the iconic gaming experience. This marks the ongoing revival of the Marathon trilogy, with Marathon Infinity slated for a future release on Steam. Additionally, Bungie is developing a new hero shooter, further expanding their gaming portfolio.
Bungie and Aleph One Developers have reintroduced Marathon 2, the second installment of Bungie's classic first-person shooter series, as a free offering on Steam. Known primarily for the Halo and Destiny franchises, Bungie originally gained recognition in the gaming world with the Marathon series during the 1990s.
Originally launched for Apple Macintosh computers in 1994, the Marathon trilogy contributed significantly to FPS gaming conventions despite being overshadowed by other titles of its time. Its recent availability on Steam marks a resurgence of interest, following the earlier release of the first Marathon game on the platform in May. Now, fans can delve into Marathon 2's immersive gameplay and storyline for free, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Bungie and Aleph One Developers.
Named Classic Marathon 2, this edition has been meticulously updated by Aleph One Developers, a dedicated group focused on bringing the Marathon trilogy to modern gaming platforms. Enhancements such as improved graphics and compatibility adjustments ensure that players can enjoy the game seamlessly on contemporary systems. This re-release not only preserves the legacy of Marathon but also sets the stage for further exploration of the series, as Bungie and its partners continue to revisit and revive these seminal titles for new audiences.
Classic Marathon 2 Now Free to Play on Steam
Classic Marathon 2 on Steam introduces several new features, including optional widescreen HUD support, 3D filtering and perspective enhancements, positional audio, and the ability to play at over 60 frames per second with interpolation. Players who prefer the original experience can choose to disable these updates. Additionally, a texture pack DLC is available, replacing the game's graphics with those from the XBLA version of Marathon: Durandal.
Continuing the saga from the first game, Marathon 2 follows the protagonist's struggle against the rogue AI Durandal, who manipulates them into carrying out its sinister plans. Looking ahead, the third installment, Marathon Infinity, is also set to join the Steam lineup later this year, offered at no cost like its predecessors. Meanwhile, Bungie is reinvigorating the Marathon franchise with a new hero shooter iteration. While this shift has sparked some controversy among fans, details are still emerging about the game's development and direction, prompting anticipation and reservation alike until more is revealed.
